As shipping companies embrace advanced shipboard technologies for digitalization, decarbonization, and crew welfare, data usage is increasing. This digital interconnectedness enhances safety, efficiency, and sustainability but also heightens cyber threats. Ship owners and managers must prioritize security in their connectivity strategies.

To mitigate maritime cyber incidents, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has introduced two unified requirements (URs): UR E26 – ‘Cyber Resilience of Ships’ and UR E27 – ‘Cyber Resilience of Onboard Systems and Equipment’. These URs set minimum standards for the cyber resilience of new vessels and their connected systems. WhileE26 targets shipbuilders and owners, and E27 focuses on system vendors, it’s crucial to assess both standards together for a complete cybersecurity profile of a ship.

Aperio is a system installed in ships that is poised for E27 certification. After several years on the market, it has been updated to meet E27 standards, ensuring that all Aperio 6 systems and newer will be compliant. However, older Aperio systems (Aperio 3-Aperio 5) will not be updated. The enhancements for Aperio 6 are just the beginning, as the system will continue to evolve to address emerging cybersecurity threats.
